The Butterfly Foundation

The Butterfly Foundation - supporting Australians in the prevention & treatment of eating disorders & body image issues.

About

Butterfly is Australia's largest charity working to support all people experiencing eating disorders and body image issues.

Eating disorders are serious, complex and life threatening mental and physical illnesses.  They develop due to a range of reasons and can affect people of all ages, genders and from all backgrounds and cultures.  It is estimated that there are approximately 1 million people experiencing an eating disorder.  You can't always tell by looking at someone if they are experiencing one, they are not a lifestyle choice, nor are they about vanity.  Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses.  Stigma is the barrier to people seeking the support they need to recover.  Early intervention and effective treatment make a full recovery more possible.

Butterfly's vision is to 'live in a world that celebrates health, wellbeing and diversity' and is working to achieve this through our four key areas of focus; Support Services, Education Services, Advocacy and Awareness and Fundraising.

    - Support Services - Butterfly operates the only National HelpLine that specialises in eating disorder support.  The ED HOPE teleweb is operated by trained professionals and open Monday-Friday, 8am-9pm. Butterfly also offers a range of treatment and recovery programs and support groups for carers. Butterfly, with thanks to Sportsgirl, can also provide financial assistance for recovery and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP).

    - Education Services - Butterfly's prevention focused  programs and initiatives are evidence based, age, developmentally appropriate and designed to support the whole community; young people, professionals and parents.  Our services work to address the modifiable risk factors and build the protective factors in young people that underpin the development of eating disorders.  Butterfly Education has reached over 550,000 young people and over 6,000 parents and professionals around Australia since 2006.   Butterfly Education encourages everyone in the community to 'Be the Change'.

     - Advocacy and Awareness - Butterfly advocates at all levels; local, state and federal government for better support and treatment of eating disorders in Australia.  Our work is done on behalf of those experiencing eating disorders and their loved ones.  Our awareness work which involves a variety of campaigns over each year aims to educate the community about what eating disorders are and are not.

     - Fundraising - Butterfly is a private organisation that operates with the support of government funding, corporate sponsorship, philanthropic grants and community donations.  Butterfly's community fundraising initiative allows people around Australia to support the organisation by hosting events and activities that raise valuable funds  to support the work of the foundation.

Those working with the Butterfly Foundation will require a Working With Children's check.
